10 Location Suggestions For Your Next Photo Session Engagements, Weddings, and More!

January 20, 2022

Below is a list of 10 great suggestions for choosing your next photo session location. Always keep in mind your desired feel and vibe to ensure your location matches your session vision!

1. Outside

We’re going to start here because it’s the most common option, but there are still a lot of things to consider. Are you looking for a more edgy urban look and feel, or are you more comfortable surrounded by trees and in a rural setting? Is there a specific type of architecture you’re looking for, something historical (Walkerville), industrial (parking garage), or modern? Unique locations also include graffiti alleys (Maiden Lane) and murals where local artists have been able to showcase their talents.

A key point to remember is that not all open spaces are fair game. Some places will require a permit to ensure guests are following rules and that the facility is aware of who will be on the property. Be sure to ask about this when planning your session to avoid being disappointed.

2. Beaches/Parks

Beaches offer wonderful scenery – and when timed right you can capture a beautiful sunset! It’s also important to remember a permit may be required at these locations, especially if it’s a provincial park. Planning your beach session for sunrise (blue hour) or sunset (golden hour) will give you beautiful, soft light and there will be fewer people at these times to photobomb your images. The only thing you need to keep your eye on is the weather. You may not get a sunrise/sunset with clouds to capture the beautiful colours, or you may run into a storm that day which could require your session to be rescheduled.

3. Library or Bookstore

Libraries (public and university) and bookstores (used and comic book stores have more character) are wonderful options for your next session. Visually, they offer a lot of symmetry and have great leading lines with vertical books and horizontal shelves. These locations also offer unique lighting, from beautiful big windows filling the space with natural light, to darker more intimate settings lit by table and wall lamps. Two things to consider for these locations: 1. You’ll need to be extra quiet during these sessions – it is a library after all, and 2. You may need a permit or special permission from the owner to shoot there.

4. Restaurants

If you’re looking for an interesting accent wall, intimate space, or unique architectural details, restaurants are a great option. The preservation of unique forgotten buildings and their transformation back into functional spaces add another element to your story especially if there’s a sentimental moment (first date, proposal spot) that happened for you there.

It’s a good idea to plan your session around peak traffic times – that way you’re not fighting for space and can enjoy your time without the hustle-bustle of dinner and lunch rushes.

5. Hotels

Hotels are a great option for your sessions. They’re styled and decorated nicely, clean, and have some interesting elements that can be used to bring together some pretty creative shots. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the space you’ll be shooting in, as well as the check-out and check-in times so you can plan your session correctly.

The hotel’s lobby, restaurants, bars, and other common areas can be great locations too, just make sure you have permission to shoot there and aren’t holding up regular traffic in the building.

6. Air BnB

If you’re looking for a unique private location (and a romantic staycation) an Air BnB is a great way to go! These locations are usually styled for a specific mood or feel, just download the app or visit their website to find great local places near you! It’s also a good idea to clarify if they allow photography in the rental as some owners may not be comfortable with that. Two of my favourite Essex County locations are Leslie and Main and 14th Coffee Co.

7. Buildings

This can include anything from your local university, city hall, or historical buildings (they don’t make them like they used to!) in your area. Local areas include the University of Windsor (wide variety of architecture and can also help tell your love story if you met at school), Lasalle or Leamington City Hall (living walls), there’s Willistead Manor or the former Sandwich Towne Post Office. A great way to find an available facility is to check your city’s website or reach out to the owner/management company of the building to see.

8. Museums & Art Galleries

If you’re looking for a variety of backdrops in a very close space, museums and galleries are a fantastic option. In most cases, you only need to pay the admission fee (there might be some limitations for your photographer), but the trade-off is the stunning background and beautiful artwork to add character to your session. Galleries are designed to showcase beautiful pieces of art, which means there will be some beautiful architectural qualities as well. Stunning natural light spaces, grand lobbies, interesting hallways, and balconies are all great locations for some incredible scenes and fill your gallery with a variety of photos.

9. Rent a Studio Space

Studio spaces are great options for sessions with minimal distractions. Common features include exposed brick and feature walls, along with a variety of seamless papers for a clean and crisp look, and you can control the lighting to guarantee no matter what the weather is outside, you’ll be comfortable and beautifully lit inside.

10. Local Landmarks

Are you looking for something iconic from your photo session? Local landmarks are a great way to add an extra element to your session and create some iconic images that you’ll want to print and hang on your wall. It’s a good idea to visit the landmark before your session to find the best times to avoid all of the tourists and regular traffic.
